When was Maitidevi temple built?


Maitidevi Temple is one of the main Shaktipiths of Kathmandu Valley, built first built 7th century by Anshu Verma on Lichvi period , later its estaibalses on  20th century , by  Chandra Shamsher, especially during Bada Dashan, this temple is very crowded and on other days as well, devotees come here for the Dashain of the Goddess.


The priest of the temple says that devotees  comes to the temple and prays that their heart will be fulfilled. As mentioned in Skanda Purana, this temple is said to be more than 400 years old.

This temple is located in the middle of the Kathmandu Valley,at 30 wards, Dilibazar ,  very powerful, currently surrounded by dense human settlements from all sides. According to various folklores, Maitidevi temple is known as Panchakumari Maitidevi.


What is the importance of Maitidevi Temple?

I would like to describe one of the famous secrets among various Kimbadantis. In ancient times, this place was a green forest. Accordingly, when a tantric was sitting to graze his goat, the five goddesses were about to fly from the sky path. The Tantric thought his mind to settle    these goddess  the place for  country safety. According to Tantrik's prayer to his Tantra way to  Panchakumari to live in this place, Maitidevi accepted her request and appeared in this place.

What is the  legend of Maiti devi Temole  ?

Similarly, according to another legend, when a farmer was digging a field on the banks of the Rudramati river , he found a big stone. But the stone could not move even an inch despite a thousand efforts, and fell asleep at that place due to exhaustion. At that time, the five goddess were riding on a peacock from the sky path, when the farmer was swept away by the wind of the peacock's feathers and the farmer, wake up . After  He wake up the describe all happned to the goddesses, Panchkumari Devi was influenced by the farmer's talk and also because the self was established at that place, this Maitidevi is also called Maiti Tirtha. The Mayourkund is still safe when visiting the temple.


According to the priest of the temple, Maitidevi is worshiped as the deity of 28 villages in the Kathmandu Valley. In ancient times, on the day of Kukur Tihar, it was customary for the residents of 28 villages to celebrate Lakshmi Puja on the next day only after entering the temple on a cot from Maligaon.


There is a popular belief that worshiping Shakti Swaroopini Debi, with full sincerity, according to the rules and regulations, will relieve suffering and also fulfill the soul. Maitidevi of the world, being Maitighar, is the mother of Manokamana Mai Temple  located in Gorkha.

As mentioned in the Bajracharya book, after visiting Manokamana Mata and returning to the east side of the temple, take a bath in Rudmati and perform the puja offered in the Manokamana temple along with Mayurkund water. Maitidebi is believed to be with Panchkumari Mata.


According to the experience of this priest, Maiti Devi can be seen in three forms throughout the day. he  tells about the transformation of a smiling child in the morning, a young  in the afternoon and an old  in the evening.


People who have suffered from various sufferings come and worship at Maitidevi temple, after a few days , the said people come again laughing. There is an idol of Betal Bhairav ​​in the main dooor  facing the north side of this temple. It is believed that if you worship  to Bhairav, the money that someone has taken  and not returned will also be returned.


A stone statue of Devi  can be seen in Manokamna  on the right side of Maitidevi. It is believed that a tantric in that temple took half of the idol and installed it in Manokamana Mai temple of Gorkha.


According to the history, this Shaktipith is worshiped by the names of Mayamati, Pancha Balakumari, Niyati Devi, Maitidevi,  etc. According to the history, this temple was first built by King Pratap Malla of Kathmandu state.


In the year 1929 B.S from Shri 3 Bhimshamser, he started the tradition of worshiping Panchabali in the year .  On  1949 B.S. He also offered chadi choran inside the temple, made a satal  and in 2036 year it is found .


Shri Chandra Shamsher had the custom of opening and closing the temple doors daily and in 1965 he installed a gold polish on the roof of the temple. Similarly, there are temples of various gods and goddesses in the courtyard of this temple.

How found the Stolen idol of Maitidevi and Bhirav inside the Box ?

One day in May 2019, the flight from Kathmandu to Delhi did not take off at the scheduled time due to a box that 15 soldiers could not lift when trying to load it. Police found  that the idol was lost on February 17, 2019, and the idol was re-established after offering forgiveness and pooja to and the idol put on khat and carry out  in the three city , Kathmandu , Bhaktapur and  Kathmandu.


From that time, every year on the Ashtamika day of Dashain, the president of the state had a tradition of visiting the Shaktipithas himself, and from the palace, representatives and Panchabalis were sent to worship Naxsal Bhagwati, Guhayeswari, Panchakumari Maitidevi, Sobha Bhagwati, Kalika Sthan, Bhadrakali, Naradevi, Indrayani and Bijeswari.

Where is The hidden things and  place of Maitidevi Temple  ? 

It is said that there were four tap  in the temple in prehistoric times. In which the goddess used to bathe, out of which we can still see the shape of two stone streams. Sky Lamp  is lit inside this temple. There is a rule that when going to the temple to worship, the first thing to do is to have darshan of the Kshetrapal and next darshan to Maitidevi .



There is a cremation ground in the courtyard of Maitidevi temple in the middle of dense of population . In this ghat, the bodies of 7 castes of the Newar community are cremated.
